Announces a
CONFERENCE ON CORPORATE GOVERNANCE
Olin Business School
Washington University in St. Louis
November 11 - 13, 2004

The Olin Business School at Washington University, the Center for Research in Economics and Strategy (CRES) and the Journal of Financial Intermediation will be co-hosting a conference, "Corporate Governance: Present and Future", November 11-13, 2004 at the Charles F. Knight Center on the Washington University campus. The topics of interest for the conference are: the optimal design of governance mechanisms; comparative corporate governance in the U.S., Europe and Asia; executive compensation; the role of the board of directors; the role of financial markets and other stakeholders such as institutional investors in the governance process; selection of the board of directors; executive compensation; CEO succession; private-versus-public ownership; the proxy voting process; Sarbanes-Oxley and other regulatory initiatives; self-regulationversus- public regulation; the roles of investment banks and auditing firms; and the impact of corporate governance on key decisions made by the firm. This is not an exhaustive list, and empirical as well as theoretical papers on these, as well as related topics are welcome. If you wish to have your paper considered for presentation at the conference, please send the paper electronically by June 15, 2004 to Jeanne Grigsby at jgrigsby@wustl.edu. Word and PDF documents are welcome. The organizing committee consists of Bart Hamilton, Glenn MacDonald, Todd Milbourn and Anjan Thakor. Those submitting papers will be informed of the committees' decision by August 1, 2004.

Franklin Allen (Wharton), Ray Ball (Chicago), Lucian Bebchuk (Harvard), and Bengt Holmstrom (MIT) will be participating in the conference. November 11 and 12 will be the purely academic part of the conference and then on November 13, we will have academics, policymakers and senior corporate executives interacting on a variety of corporate governance issues. Joel Seligman (Dean, Washington University Law School), Charles Knight (Chairman, Emerson Corporation), Robert Felton (McKinsey), and others will be participating on November 13.

The Journal of Financial Intermediation (JFI) is interested in devoting a special issue to this topic. Please indicate whether you wish to have your paper considered for publication in the journal. If so, the submission fee will be waived. Any paper submitted to the journal will go through a review process for conference program inclusion like other submissions to the conference and will also be separately reviewed for the journal like any other paper submitted to the journal. Participation in the conference does not necessitate that you submit your paper to the JFI, but we certainly like to encourage it. Submission to the conference does not require submission to the JFI, but the JFI would welcome joint submissions.

The conference organizers will pay expenses, as per guidelines to be stipulated later, for those attending the conference. We look forward to an exciting conference and hope you will submit your paper for consideration.
