Email: Configuring Software to Send Mail from Off-Campus

The Olin mail server does not accept email for delivery outside of Olin's email system (relaying) unless certain conditions are met. This helps to ensure that someone cannot use our mail server to send SPAM and try to hide their identity. It will also prevent a worm or virus on a PC from using our mail server to distribute itself. Mail will be accepted for relay only if the sender is authenticated with a valid username and password. Relay from the Olin modem bank was restricted in January 2004, and relay from local Olin networks was restricted in February 2004.

The table below summarizes the clients, platforms on which they run, and whether they support authentication. If your client is not listed, please let use know, and we will try to check for compatibility. If your software is listed and does not support authentication, we strongly encourage you to upgrade or switch to one of the other programs. Instructions are provided on how to modify your configuration to support authentication.

A list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) is available.

Note: If you are using Microsoft Outlook (any version) with the Exchange Server service, you are not affected by this change. Only users of Internet email clients are affected
