Sat-Sun: closed4/12/07: Student Mail Problem on 4/12 A backup job on the mail server failed last night causing log files to accumulate in a folder. The resulting low disk space condition caused student mailboxes to be unavailable. The problem was cleared this morning, and we're investigating why the backup job failed and why disk space monitors didn't produce an alert. 4/11/07: Changes to news.wustl.edu If you use Usenet news groups hosted on news.wustl.edu, please note that on Thursday April 12, the University will discontinue hosting non wu.* newsgroups. If you need to access non wu.* groups, one option is to use Google Groups. 4/9/07: Wireless and VPN Logon Issue Between 7:17 PM and 11:03 PM, the RADIUS server was unable to authenticate wireless and VPN logon requests due to a lack of disk space. A configuration file was generated that caused the old log files to build-up.

The next time you logon, the Application Data folder will be relocated back to its normal location. Once the registry issue is resolved, the redirection will be restored. The Desktop folder redirection will remain in place. 3/19/07: Student Account Profile Changes If you are a student, the next time you logon to one of our PCs, your Desktop and Application Data folders will be moved from your user profile to a network folder. Moving these folders out of your profile will help decrease logon and logoff times. You should notice an improvement in logon/logoff times on your second logon.
Your Desktop folder (which contains any items you place on your desktop) will now be located on your network drive (M:\). In the past, our recommendation was to not place files on the desktop. Now that the folder is part of your M: drive, however, that is no longer our recommendation. Feel free to store files and folders on your desktop if you so choose. Please note that these desktop files and folders do count against your storage quota.3/15/07: Network Maintenance (Thursday 3/15 @ 11 PM) Update: Completed on schedule.

Please check the DST 2007 page for instructions for updating your computer, PDA, and selected software programs. 2/2/07: WUBSTUDENT Maintenance (Feb 3 @ 10 PM) Student profile data was moved from WUBSTUDENT to a new server Thursday morning. In order to complete the migration of WUBSTUDENT to new hardware, we will take WUBSTUDENT offline Saturday night at 10 PM. This outage should last approximately one hour.
Printer queues and network shares have already been moved, and all that remains is to disconnect the data volumes where student data files (student M: drives) are stored and reconnect on the new server, and then rename the server. If you utilize WUBSTUDENT as a normal part of your activities, you will not need to make any changes on your system.
Moving profile data as well as some additional changes we will be making to profiles should address the issues with slow logon/logoff times for students with normal sized profiles. The additional changes we will be making will help address slow logons/logoffs caused by h1/29/07: Wireless problem Corrected The problem with the wireless network which prevented users form accessing off-campus resources has been corrected. We expect this feature to be available on WUBSTUDENT during winter break. 9/19/03: W32.Swen.A@mm virus upgraded to category 3 Symantec has upgraded the W32.Swen.A@mm virus to category 3 due to its rapid spread yesterday and overnight. Swen is a mass mailing worm, spreading itself using its own mail engine. It also uses file-sharing networks such as KaZaA and IRC to spread itself.
Swen exploits a bug in Internet Explorer that is over two years old! Please make sure that you have installed all Critical Updates for your system by going toWindows Update.
Detailed information about Swen is available at: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.swen.a@mm.html9/10/03: New critical updates for Windows and Office Microsoft has released new critical updates for Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. If you are using one of these operating systems and have your system set to automatically update, you should see a prompt in your system tray to install critical updates. You can also go directly to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install the updates from there.
Updates were also released for Microsoft Office. View available updates for your system by going to http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/ and clicking "Check for Updates." Your system will be scanned, and you will be able to install any updates you are missing. Note that the Office Update site only supports Office 2000, XP, and 2003.8/31/03: Mail Maintenance Complete Student mailboxes were unavailable Saturday night/Sunday morning until approximately 1 PM for database defragmentation. The mail database for these mailboxes was reduced approximately 45 GB. The next database defragmentation will occur in December as part of the upgrade to Exchange 2003. 8/21/03: Worm Summary & Sobig.F Upgraded to Category 4 Symantec has upgraded the Sobig.F worm to category 4 (severe). Over the last couple days, we've seen ~7,000 messages per day (25% of the total) rejected at the mail server because of the Sobig.F virus.
Virus summaries and removal tools are available for W32.Blaster.Worm, W32.Welchia.Worm, and W32.Sobig.F@mm.8/20/03: New Security Updates for Windows Microsoft released new security updates for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 today. Make sure you visit the Windows Update site to install these patches on all of your systems.
If you have automatic updates enabled on your system, you should be prompted by an update notification in your system tray (looks like a little globe with a Windows logo).8/20/03: Update on ISPs Blocking Ports Restech (provider of network ports in on-campus and off-campus university housing) started blocking port 135 yesterday. So if you live in university housing, you won't be able to use Outlook directly. I've talked to NTS, and they're going to see if they get them to open those ports up for university systems. Until then, you will need to use Outlook Web Access. 8/19/03: New Worms and Virus signatures Symantec has identified a new worm, W32.Welchia.Worm, rated as a category 4 (severe threat). This worm is detected starting with the 8/18 signatures released yesterday and announced in a previous message. This worm uses the same DCOM RPC vulnerability that the Blaster worm uses, so make sure you update your machine if you haven't done so already. See Symantec's bulletin for more info.
Latest virus signatures for Symantec/Norton AntiVirus are 8/19 (released today) and are available for download using Live Update in your software.8/15/03: Mail outage for maintenance, Saturday, 8/16 There will be a multi-hour mail outage starting Saturday (August 16) at 10 PM, so that we can compact the mail database. This is maintenance we schedule twice a year to recover empty space in the mail system and reduce the size of the mail database. While the system is down, you will not be able to access your mailbox. Incoming mail will be queued at the mail gateway and held until the system is online again. The mail system should be available again, sometime Sunday morning. We appreciate your patience during this maintenance. 8/15/03: Blaster Worm Updates and AntiVirus mailing list Visit the Blaster Worm page for the latest information on the worm and how to clean and protect your machine. Information is also available about port blocking by ISPs to control the worm, which has the side effect of preventing you from mapping drives and using Outlook to connect to Exchange.
Subscribe to the AntiVirus Updates mailing list for updates about new viruses and the availability of new virus signatures for Symantec and Norton AntiVirus.8/8/03: Update on Lab Renovations Although we had hoped the computer lab would reopen by the end of July, the lab remains closed. This free feature is offered to accredited university or educational institutions and harnesses the power of the internet to provide the most current search results. Google's University Search is utilized by several other top business schools, so we're in good company.
With Google's University Search, visitors have the option to perform a SiteSearch (search only our specific domain [olin.wustl.edu]) or a WebSearch (search the entire web).
You will see this new search feature on Olin's home page - http://www.olin.wustl.edu/ as well as the page you're on now -- the Links & Announcements page

9/24/02: Additional mail relay restrictions starting Friday (9/27) In 2000, we started requiring users to authenticate before sending mail through our mail server if they were off-campus and not using the modem bank. We continued to allow relay from other parts of campus on a temporary basis.
Beginning on Friday (9/27), authentication will also be required for users on campus who are not on the local network (Simon Hall and the Knight Center). This change will mainly affect students on the South 40.
Information on how to configure your software can be found online. An FAQ is also available. Please note that if you are using Outlook Web Access or Outlook with the Exchange Server service, this change does not apply to you. This change only applies to people using programs such as Outlook Express, Eudora, etc.9/19/02: Changes to Wireless Network Beginning Monday, September 23, logons will be required to use the wireless network in Simon Hall. Opening any web page other than the Olin web site will direct you to logon to the new Bluesocket gateway. Users will logon with the same username and password they use for the modem bank (user@olin, user@artsci, user@cec, etc.).
We are also changing the SSID/Network Name for the network, from Bsch00l to WLAN. We are changing the name so that users can move between the campus network and Simon Hall with the same configuration. We will allow open association for a couple weeks to give everyone time to change their setup.
Detailed information about the wireless network can be found online.7/29/02: SPAM messages IS has implemented a new mail gateway to add SPAM filtering to the existing checks for viruses. All inbound mail is filtered through these filters (including old addresses such as @wuolin, @simon, etc.) You've probably noticed an increase in the number of messages with subjects that start with "*** SPAM ****". Instructions are available to filter messages marked as SPAM. Additional information and details on the system including instructions on how to filter spam can be found online at:

http://www.olin.wustl.edu/computing/help/mail/spam.cfm7/29/02: Modem Bank Logon Changes effective 8/2 Back in March we announced that the way you logon to the modem bank will be changing. At that time, we said that both systems would operate in parallel so you could logon either the old way or the new way until July 15. We extended the deadline, but we will turn off the old way to logon effective Friday, August 2.
If you are logging on using "username@olin" with the same password you use for e-mail/network, you are using the new method and do NOT need to make any changed.
If you are logging on using "username" and your modem bank password (which may or may not be the same as your e-mail/network password), you will need to change your dial-up configuration.
For detailed information on what you need to change, please see http://www.olin.wustl.edu/computing/remote/newlogon.cfm
